Building stronger communities in the Northern Territory
The Australian Government is providing 33 organisations in the Northern Territory with more than $10 million over three years to strengthen their governance and service delivery arrangements to ensure Aboriginal communities are getting the greatest benefit from local services.
Minister for Indigenous Affairs Jenny Macklin said the Stronger Futures Enhancing Communities funding will be used to help organisations develop business plans, upgrade IT systems, strengthen board and governance arrangements and improve their ability to work with governments and communities.
“The organisations that will receive the funding are already making an enormous difference to the lives of Aboriginal people by providing services such as health clinics, parenting classes and women’s shelters in Indigenous communities across the Northern Territory,” Ms Macklin said.
“They are also an important source for jobs and training opportunities for Aboriginal people.
“Funding under the package will also assist organisations to improve the skills of their employees in areas such as financial management, governance, IT and human resources.”
The initiative will not only provide valuable jobs but also ensure local people get the most out of local services, understand their rights and responsibilities and have their voices heard in the development of policies that affect their community.
“The Australian Government strongly believes that strengthening the governance and leadership skills of individuals and communities will lead to more sustainable and independent organisations, better employment outcomes and improved local services,” Ms Macklin said.
“The Government’s long term, $3.4 billion commitment under Stronger Futures will continue to make a big difference in Aboriginal communities over the next ten years.
“Our unprecedented investment to address unacceptable levels of disadvantage gives Aboriginal people an assurance that we are committed to building stronger communities together.”
