Disability service providers get ready for a National Disability Insurance Scheme

Sixty-four organisations will receive grants of up to $30,000 from the Australian Government to help them get ready for a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Parliamentary Secretary for Disabilities and Carers, Senator Jan McLucas said the NDIS Readiness Fund is part of the Australian Government’s $3.1 million investment to help Australian Disability Enterprises prepare for reform.

“A National Disability Insurance Scheme will significantly change how we deliver disability care and support across the country,” Senator McLucas said.

“We want all areas of the disability sector to be ready to make the change, including our Australian Disability Enterprises, which employ more than 20,000 Australians with disability.

“These grants will help Australian Disability Enterprises, including smaller, regional businesses, prepare for the changes by helping with the costs of new upgrades to computer software and information technology, training and information services, and new equipment.

“The Australian Government is committed to ensuring the sector is well supported as we move towards this historic reform.

“We’ve established a new expert group to consider the challenges facing our disability workforce and sector and help us find the best ways to make sure they are well prepared to make the transition.

“We want Australians with disability, their families and carers to start benefiting from an NDIS as quickly as possible, because we understand how long people have waited for change.

“An NDIS will mean that for the first time, Australians with significant and permanent disability will receive care and support over their lifetime, regardless of how they acquired their disability.

“The Australian Government will deliver $1 billion over four years to start rolling out the first stage of a National Disability Insurance Scheme.

“From the middle of next year, people with disability, their families and carers in selected sites around the country will start to receive care and support through an NDIS.

“The Government will provide support to about 10,000 people with significant and permanent disabilities across the country from mid-2013, and this will expand to about 20,000 people from the middle of 2014.

In addition to the NDIS Readiness Fund, the Australian Government’s $3.1 million support package for ADEs includes corporate governance training for boards, management and staff to enhance understanding of an NDIS and its impact on the workplace.
